Gelasio Caetani di Sermoneta

Gelasio Caetani was a mining engineer before he became an ambassador. After civil engineering studies in Rome and specialist training in Liège and at Columbia, he worked for Bunker Hill and Sullivan in Idaho and established a mining consultancy in San Francisco. He returned to Italy during the First World War and applied his technical knowledge to military engineering, including the mine detonated beneath the Col di Lana in April 1916. ¹

A nationalist who joined the Fascist cause, Caetani became Mussolini’s representative in Washington in 1922. His American business contacts helped explain the appointment. Working with financial adviser Guido Jung, he explored loans and a settlement of Italy’s war debt. Those negotiations did not reach agreement during his mission; the final settlement came under Giacomo De Martino in 1925. ²

Caetani also served as a public advocate for the regime. After the murder of opposition deputy Giacomo Matteotti, he sought to distance Mussolini from responsibility and portrayed Fascist rule as a source of order and prosperity. His efforts to secure less restrictive American immigration rules failed as Congress tightened quotas in 1924. ²

Outside diplomacy, Caetani restored family property, advised on drainage in the Pontine region, and edited the family’s extensive historical papers. His publications included the Regesta chartarum and Domus Caietana. Later historians used his extensive historical editions despite deficiencies in their editing. He died in Rome in 1934. ¹
