Former German Embassy, Ferguson House
1435 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC
From a Private House to an Embassy
Adolf Cluss and Paul Schulze designed this house for Thomas Ferguson in 1881. Germany purchased it in 1893 for its Washington embassy. The building stood on Highland Terrace, where a service road separated the elevated houses from Massachusetts Avenue. [1]
German diplomatic use was interrupted during the First World War and ended in 1941. The mansion survived the mission’s departure but was demolished in 1959. [1]
