Nehushtan

Ya'akov Nehoshtan was born in Bulgaria and moved to Palestine in 1944. He joined the Irgun, was detained by the British, and was held in camps in Eritrea and Kenya. After qualifying as a lawyer, he became active in Herut and represented the Gahal alliance in the Knesset from 1969 to 1974. 1

As minister and deputy chief of mission in Washington, Nehoshtan took part in Menachem Begin's September 1981 visit. Three months later, with Ambassador Ephraim Evron away, he received a sharply critical message from Secretary of State Alexander Haig after Israel's action on the Golan Heights. Haig informed him that Washington would suspend implementation of its strategic cooperation memorandum with Israel. Speaking personally, Nehoshtan objected that the American response was too harsh. 2, 3

Nehoshtan later served as ambassador to the Netherlands from 1982 to 1985. He died in April 2019. 1, 4
