Juan José Bremer de Martino
Juan José Bremer combined diplomacy with the administration of Mexico's cultural institutions. As director of the National Institute of Fine Arts from 1976 to 1982, he promoted cultural activity outside the capital. His administration created a national promotion directorate and regional services, expanded competitions and festivals, and supported libraries, museums, and cultural centers. Literary prizes in several states, visual arts competitions in Oaxaca and Guanajuato, and chamber music activity in San Miguel de Allende formed part of that program. 1
Bremer also served in the presidency, as undersecretary for culture, and as a federal deputy who chaired the Chamber of Deputies' foreign affairs committee. His diplomatic assignments included Sweden, the Soviet Union, Germany, Spain, the United States, Britain, Cuba, and UNESCO. He arrived in Washington in 2001. There, he worked on the Fox administration's attempt to negotiate a new migration arrangement with the United States. 2, 3
His later career included representation at UNESCO from 2019 to 2024 and leadership of the Matías Romero Institute, Mexico's diplomatic academy. Bremer's books, including El fin de la Guerra Fría y el salvaje mundo nuevo, Tiempos de guerra y paz, and De Westfalia a Post-Westfalia, examine international order and the practice of diplomacy. 2, 1
