Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernández

Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernández's route to Washington passed through economic policy, border finance, and national security. He studied economics at ITAM and public administration at Harvard. As undersecretary for North America, he managed relations with the United States and Canada and led negotiations over the Security and Prosperity Partnership. He subsequently handled Latin American affairs and domestic governance and security before managing the North American Development Bank in San Antonio. ¹

Ambassador during 2017–18, he took part in the negotiations that replaced NAFTA with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement. In an October 2018 interview, he defended the agreement as a way to reduce uncertainty and strengthen regional production, pointing to its electronic commerce provisions and changes affecting the automobile industry. He also disputed the argument that restricting trade would resolve the difficulties faced by Mexico's smaller farmers. ^{1, 2}

After government service, Gutiérrez worked in infrastructure investment and strategic advice to businesses and governments. His later professional roles included managing partner of BEEL Infrastructure and participation in the Wilson Center's Mexico Institute advisory board. ¹
