Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros
Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros studied in the United States and pursued graduate economics at Harvard, where his contemporaries included Daniel Cosío Villegas and Harry Dexter White. He entered Mexican public service in 1929 and worked in finance and industry. In 1940, he prepared a plan to reorganize Nacional Financiera as an institution for industrial development, strengthening its lending and investment functions. 1
Espinosa represented Mexico at Bretton Woods in 1944, working in the commission that considered the International Monetary Fund. He also attended the 1946 Savannah meeting that prepared the new financial institutions for operation. As ambassador in Washington, he addressed the political symbolism of the approaching centenary of the Mexican-American War. In February 1946, he urged Assistant Secretary Spruille Braden to coordinate the two countries' approach to the anniversary and to send a special ambassador to Mexico's presidential inauguration. 1, 2
His later support for General Miguel Henríquez Guzmán's opposition presidential campaign in 1952 ended his prospects for further government appointments, according to the Bank of Mexico's institutional history. 1
