Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo

Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo trained as a geological engineer at the Bandung Institute of Technology and specialized in remote sensing at the universities of Michigan and Iowa, earning his doctorate in 1987. His scientific work applied geographic information systems to problems including disaster planning, crop forecasting, marine resources, and forest management. He later led Indonesian agencies responsible for technology assessment, marine exploration, and fisheries research. ^{1, 2}

His international work included coordinating a study of illegal fishing in the Arafura Sea and serving as executive secretary of the 2009 World Ocean Conference. In December 2012, he became director of the FAO division responsible for fisheries and aquaculture resource use and conservation. He subsequently served as Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs in 2014–15 and as a transport minister’s special envoy to the International Civil Aviation Organization. ^{1, 2}

Appointed ambassador to the United States in August 2025, Soesilo arrived in Washington in September and received the mission from acting chief Nidya Kartikasari. He identified critical minerals, education, sustainable development, defense, and protection of Indonesian citizens as priorities for the posting. ³

His academic connections became part of that work. Visiting the University of Iowa in December 2025, he met earth science faculty and the Stanley Museum of Art, joined Indonesian students and alumni, and proposed research partnerships, student exchanges, and links in the arts. He encouraged Indonesian and Iowa researchers to develop joint funding proposals in science and technology. ⁴
