Domício da Gama
Domício da Gama began as a journalist and writer before becoming one of the Baron of Rio Branco’s diplomatic assistants. He left engineering studies unfinished and reported from Paris for the Gazeta de Notícias. Work on immigration led to service in the boundary missions concerning Argentina, French Guiana, and British Guiana. A founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, he continued to write fiction and criticism while pursuing a diplomatic career. 1, 2
After appointments in Lima and Buenos Aires, Gama became ambassador in Washington in 1911. During the 1914 crisis between the United States and Mexico, he joined Argentina’s Rómulo Naón and Chile’s Eduardo Suárez Mujica as the three ABC mediators at Niagara Falls. They sought to draw Venustiano Carranza and the Constitutionalists into the diplomatic process. 1, 3
Gama’s Washington work also included defending Brazilian coffee interests against American restrictions. He returned to lead the Foreign Ministry in 1918–19, when Brazil was selecting its delegation to the Paris peace conference. He then served in London and represented Brazil at the League of Nations, including work toward a permanent Brazilian seat on its Council. 2
He presided over the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1919 and left short fiction, essays, and a substantial correspondence. He died in Rio de Janeiro in November 1925. 1, 2
