Cecilia Nahón
Cecilia Nahón is an economist specializing in development and international economic relations. She earned degrees at the University of Buenos Aires, the London School of Economics, and FLACSO. Before becoming an ambassador, she headed strategy at Argentina's investment development agency and served as undersecretary for investment development and secretary for international economic relations. Her work combined research and teaching with negotiations on investment, trade, and development. 1, 2
Nahón served as ambassador to the United States in 2013–15 while also acting as Argentina's G20 sherpa. Sovereign debt litigation was a central part of her Washington assignment. On September 29, 2014, she delivered a note to Secretary of State John Kerry protesting the proposed contempt finding against Argentina in the litigation over payments to bondholders. The government argued that such a finding would infringe Argentine sovereignty; Judge Thomas Griesa subsequently issued the contempt ruling. 2, 3
After the embassy, Nahón founded American University's Model G20 initiative and taught courses on G20 negotiations and sovereign debt restructuring. In February 2020 she joined the World Bank board as alternate executive director for a constituency of six South American countries. She also worked on development effectiveness and gender diversity within the board. The Argentine presidency included her in its Washington coordination team alongside Ambassador Jorge Argüello and the country's IMF and IDB representatives. 1, 2, 4
