Jorge Argüello
Jorge Argüello is a lawyer and politician whose diplomatic career followed service in Buenos Aires city government and Argentina's Congress. Beginning as a city legislator in 1987, he served two periods as a national deputy and chaired the Chamber's foreign relations committee and its parliamentary observatory on the Falklands/Malvinas question. He subsequently represented Argentina at the United Nations in 2007–11 and served his first Washington term in 2011–12. 1
After Washington, Argüello represented Argentina in Portugal and Cabo Verde. In 2014 he founded Embajada Abierta, a center concerned with international affairs and public policy. His work also included academic appointments and, in 2018, responsibility for the Malvinas question in the government of Tierra del Fuego. 1
Alberto Fernández returned him to the Washington embassy in 2020 and appointed him Argentina's G20 sherpa. The presidency placed the embassy at the head of a permanent coordination team that included Argentina's representatives at the IMF, World Bank, and Inter-American Development Bank. Its initial agenda covered debt renegotiation, development bank portfolios, and work in the UN and OAS. In November 2021 Argüello and cabinet chief Juan Manzur also planned an export promotion effort linking the embassy, consulates, national ministries, and provinces, while seeking a sustainable IMF agreement. 2, 3
