Antonio Martín-Rivero
Antonio Martín Rivero served in Cuba’s early diplomatic representation in Mexico before his Washington appointment. He was secretary of the Cuban legation and acting chief during Carlos García Vélez’s absences and after his resignation in 1906. He also briefly took responsibility for Guatemala’s legation. 1
In Washington, Rivero handled the diplomatic consequences of the August 1912 assault on the American chargé d’affaires in Havana. He expressed regret, reported that Cuban prosecutors had been instructed to bring the attacker to trial, and emphasized that Cuba’s secretary of state had personally visited the American legation to offer satisfaction. 2
Rivero headed Cuba’s special mission to Wilson’s 1913 inauguration; Pablo Desvernine, a fellow member of that mission, subsequently replaced him as minister. Rivero returned to Mexico in 1920. His letter of credence used the fuller name Antonio Martín Rivero y Aguiar. 3, 1, 4
In 1909 Rivero was elected to Mexico’s Society of Geography and Statistics. He proposed a study linking cycles of solar activity to political upheaval. 5
