Interpretive architectural study of the catalogued property.
3051 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC
South Africa’s Massachusetts Avenue premises developed as separate residential and office buildings. DC issued building permits for the legation residence in 1936 and the original chancery in 1941, both designed by John J. Whelan. [1]
The later modernization brought the former residence and chancery into one connected embassy building. Jair Lynch, the project’s development manager during predevelopment, describes a conversion that consolidated ceremonial and state functions. Davis Brody Bond Aedas designed the renovation and addition, giving the former residential wing a new role within the chancery. [2]
