Villa Firenze
Blanche and Arthur O’Brien bought the estate in 1925 and commissioned architect Russell O. Kluge and designer H. F. Huber to build their house. Completed in 1927, it was first called Estabrook. Robert and Polly Guggenheim bought it in 1941; Robert renamed it for his mother Florence, and the couple substantially altered the interiors. [1]
A fire in 1946 destroyed furnishings and paintings, prompting a restoration led by architect Michael Rosenaur. Polly Guggenheim Logan sold the property to Italy in 1976. Villa Firenze became the official ambassadorial residence in 1977, when Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti inaugurated it. [1]
