Brazil and the United States Sign the 1942 Mutual Aid Agreement
1942
Northeastern Brazil occupied a strategic position on South Atlantic routes during the Second World War. American officials wanted secure air and sea connections there, while Brazilian leaders sought equipment and support for their own defense priorities. Military visits and negotiations had developed this cooperation before Brazil broke relations with the Axis powers at the Rio Conference in January 1942. [1]
Brazil and the United States signed a mutual aid agreement in Washington on 3 March 1942. It proposed the transfer of $200 million in American arms and munitions, replacing an earlier supply arrangement from October 1941. [2]
The two governments framed their cooperation around the defense of the Americas, while reserving the right to halt the transfers. Washington could suspend deliveries if American or hemispheric defense required it; Brazil could stop accepting them if they no longer served its defense needs. Brazil would pay 35 percent of the scheduled cost of the material supplied. [2]
The Brazilian Expeditionary Force later served in the Allied campaign in Italy under American leadership, carrying the military partnership beyond the hemisphere. [3] [2]
