Islam Karimov Visits Bill Clinton at the White House
1996-06-25
Islam Karimov and Bill Clinton discussed Uzbekistan’s political and economic reforms, security, and developments in Central Asia at the White House on 25 June 1996. [1]
Clinton encouraged stronger Uzbek links with the West, constructive relations with neighboring countries, and participation in international affairs. Washington’s interest extended to the stability of Central Asia as Uzbekistan built connections beyond those it had inherited from the Soviet Union. [1]
Uzbek officials had also become more willing to discuss human rights abuses with outsiders, according to Human Rights Watch, whose researchers had recently regained access after a long visa ban. In a report published the month before Karimov’s visit, they found that censorship and repression of peaceful opponents persisted. [2]
