Ghobash Takes the UAE Embassy's Outreach to American Governors

In 2006 Dubai Ports World's acquisition of the British company P&O, with operations at several major American ports, provoked a political controversy. The National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce described damage to the relationship and greater Emirati attention to the political consequences of investing in the United States. [1]
UAE ambassador Saqr Ghobash joined American governors in Traverse City, Michigan, at the National Governors Association's annual meeting in July 2007. Chair Janet Napolitano welcomed him by name at the opening plenary on 21 July, alongside ambassadors from Oman, Morocco, and Iraq. [2] [4]
In a June interview, Ghobash said he had arrived in Washington during the controversy over Dubai Ports World and wanted to turn the resulting American interest in the UAE into closer personal ties. [1]
During the governors' meeting, Ghobash emphasized the value of personal conversations and thanked Napolitano for access to the gathering. He also thanked National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce president David Hamod for coordinating the ambassadors' participation. [3]
