The Israel–United Arab Emirates Normalization Treaty
2020
UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a treaty establishing peace and normal diplomatic relations at the White House on 15 September 2020. Donald Trump witnessed the agreement, which opened the way for embassies, direct contacts, and public cooperation. [2] [3]
The three governments had announced the initiative on 13 August, linking normalization to Israel’s suspension of plans to declare sovereignty over areas of the West Bank described in the Trump administration’s peace proposal. Emirati and Israeli officials then began arranging agreements on travel, trade, investment, and other fields. [1]
The September treaty committed the two states to exchange ambassadors and pursue cooperation in civilian and security matters. They also referred to a negotiated solution of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, which remained unresolved. [2]
The treaty called for further agreements on investment, transport, tourism, and telecommunications. [2]
