Shavkat Mirziyoyev Visits Donald Trump at the White House
2018-05-16
The 2002 strategic partnership declaration had joined security cooperation to economic, legal, and humanitarian work. [1]
Shavkat Mirziyoyev made his first White House visit on 16 May 2018, when he and Donald Trump agreed to revive the dialogue established by the 2002 strategic partnership declaration. The presidents linked renewed cooperation to political and economic reforms under Uzbekistan’s new leader. [1]
Afghanistan occupied much of their agenda. Uzbekistan had recently hosted a conference calling for peace talks and was developing trade and transport links with its southern neighbor. Trump offered support for Uzbek railway and infrastructure proposals, while the presidents also discussed border security and a five year plan for military cooperation. [1]
Trump welcomed the release of prisoners of conscience and reductions in forced labor, and Mirziyoyev committed to a roadmap on religious freedom. The visit also brought announcements of more than twenty business agreements, with a potential value above $4.8 billion if fully implemented. [1]
