United States and Uzbekistan Establish Diplomatic Relations

1992-02-19

George H. W. Bush announced diplomatic relations with Uzbekistan on 19 February 1992. Less than a month later, on 16 March, the American embassy opened in Tashkent, with Michael Mozur serving as chargé d’affaires in the newly independent republic. [2]

Bush had recognized Uzbekistan along with the other former Soviet republics in his Christmas address in 1991. At the time, he said full diplomatic relations would follow commitments on security and democratic principles. [1] [2]

Uzbekistan opened its Washington embassy in February 1993. Its diplomats began work more than three years before the government bought the Massachusetts Avenue building that became its chancery in the summer of 1996. [3]
