Indonesia and the United States Launch Their Comprehensive Partnership

2010-11-09

Barack Obama raised a glass at Jakarta’s State Palace on 9 November 2010 during a dinner hosted by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Earlier that day, the presidents had launched a Comprehensive Partnership extending from defence and trade to universities, public health, and the environment. [1] [2]

The two governments described themselves as democratic partners while explicitly recognising Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy. A Joint Commission and a plan of action gave their officials responsibility for continuing the work after the presidential visit. [1]

Education was one of their concrete ambitions. They aimed to double the number of students studying in each other’s country over five years and supported closer links between universities. They also proposed cooperation on forests, climate change, and scientific research, drawing ministries, researchers, and students into the programme. [1]
