The 2018 U.S.–Kazakhstan Strategic Partnership Summit
2018-01-16
Nursultan Nazarbayev met Donald Trump at the White House on 16 January 2018, while Kazakhstan was serving on the United Nations Security Council. Independent for little more than a quarter century, Kazakhstan was seeking an enhanced strategic partnership with the United States; the two leaders proposed regular high level meetings. [2]
The presidents welcomed the opening of an International Atomic Energy Agency bank in Kazakhstan to supply low enriched uranium for civilian power and condemned North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Cooperation over Afghanistan also joined security concerns to practical arrangements: Kazakhstan provided routes and logistical access, and Nazarbayev offered to extend training for Afghan civilian and security personnel. [2]
In commerce, the two leaders proposed cooperation in agriculture, aviation, finance, and space technology, broadening an agenda often associated with oil. They also called for fair labor practices and stronger protection of contracts. [2]
