Jawaharlal Nehru’s First Visit to the United States

1949-10-11

Nehru arrived with practical needs that had occupied Indian diplomacy since independence. In 1947, Asaf Ali had told American officials that disturbances in the grain producing Punjab increased India's need for imports, while the cost of buying food abroad burdened the new government. By 1949, development, food supply, and access to finance remained central questions in India's dealings with Washington. [1] [2]

A nineteen gun salute greeted Jawaharlal Nehru at Washington National Airport on 11 October 1949, where Harry Truman welcomed him at 4.30 in the afternoon. On his first visit to the United States, the Indian prime minister used his arrival speech to place India’s recent independence beside the American struggle for freedom. [3]

India had been independent for two years and was preparing to become a republic. Nehru came to explain its political and economic changes and to discuss food, investment, and the means to develop the economy. The airport speeches stressed friendship and cooperation; these practical questions occupied the visit. [3] [2]

At a press conference on 7 November, Nehru said that no decision had been reached on a possible American loan for a million tons of wheat. A proposed commercial treaty also remained under discussion. He believed the journey had improved mutual understanding, though the agreements he sought were still to be negotiated. [2]
