United States Announces Earthquake Relief for Pakistan

2005-10-09

Blankets, winterized tents, and water containers were among the first American supplies dispatched after the earthquake of 8 October 2005. President Pervez Musharraf’s government requested help, and the next day the White House announced an initial contribution of up to $50 million for relief and reconstruction. [1]

Some of the worst damage lay in remote mountain communities with poor road access. The United States planned to send five Chinook and three Black Hawk helicopters to carry supplies where larger transport aircraft could not land. Cargo flights would bring relief stores into Pakistan for onward distribution. [1]

A disaster assistance team was scheduled to begin arriving on 10 October to assess needs and organize deliveries, alongside military planning and logistics support. [1]
