Great White Fleet Visits Australia

1908

Prime Minister Alfred Deakin's invitation to the American fleet bypassed British expectations of protocol. [1]

Sixteen American battleships brought crowds to Sydney Harbour in 1908 as the Great White Fleet continued its voyage around the world. At South Head alone, some 80,000 people watched the ships arrive. The fleet also called at Melbourne and Albany. [1]

Prime Minister Alfred Deakin had invited the fleet despite British misgivings. Australia still relied on Britain for naval protection, but Japan’s growing strength had caused anxiety and encouraged a search for additional friends in the Pacific. By welcoming American warships, Deakin could demonstrate Australia’s interests across the ocean as well as within the empire. [1]

Parades and receptions combined public entertainment with hopes for Australia’s future security. More than 300 American sailors deserted during the Australian calls. [1]
