Yi Eui-dam

Yi Eui-dam worked as a Foreign Ministry translator before joining the Korean legation in Washington. He was promoted from assistant translator to translator in March 1896. That July, he left Korea with legation clerk Yi Gyo-seok to join minister Yi Beom-jin on the journey to America. 1, 2

By April 1900, Yi was acting head of the legation. He reported leaks and serious deterioration in its building to the Foreign Ministry and forwarded a repair estimate from A. J. Fisher & Co. His account identified rooms and proposed work throughout the house. More than a century later, Korean heritage specialists used the surviving report to recover the legation's historic arrangement. 3

Yi later returned to local administration in Korea. He was appointed to the Yeoncheon county office at the end of 1907 and was dismissed in April 1908. 4
