Wollmar Boström

Wollmar Boström trained in law at Uppsala before joining the diplomatic service in 1905. He worked in Paris and London, served as the king's private secretary, and became cabinet secretary in 1918. After leading the missions in Madrid and Lisbon, he moved to Washington in 1925 and remained Sweden's representative there for twenty years. ¹

Commercial negotiations were a recurring part of his work. He negotiated with Spain in 1923 and with the United States in 1934. During the Second World War, Sweden's access to imported food and industrial materials became entangled with Allied demands concerning Swedish iron ore exports and transit traffic benefiting Germany. ^{1, 2}

In April 1943 Boström pressed for the opening of Anglo-American–Swedish trade talks. He conveyed Stockholm's concern that the Swedish negotiators were waiting on American comments, while American officials explained that approvals for supplies were still being worked out. ²
