Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat
Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat studied international relations at Gadjah Mada University and worked for the trading company Itochu before entering diplomatic service. His early assignments concentrated on international organizations: Geneva, Vienna, and New York, interspersed with responsibility for disarmament and political security affairs in Jakarta. He chaired the Non-Aligned Movement’s disarmament working group in 1996–1998 and attended Columbia University’s international affairs program. 1
In 1999 he served as secretary of Indonesia’s task force for East Timor’s referendum. As director of international organizations, he subsequently led Indonesian delegations in talks with the United Nations administration in East Timor. He became ambassador to Australia in 2001 and later secretary general of the Foreign Ministry, also representing Indonesia at ASEAN senior officials’ meetings. 1, 2
As ambassador in Washington from 2006, Sudjadnan presented Indonesia’s democratic transition and economic recovery to American audiences. In a January 2008 address at the Willard Hotel, he promoted the new investment law, discussed restored military relations, and described reconstruction in Aceh. Answering a question about illegal logging, he appealed for international cooperation against buyers of stolen timber. In a 2009 interview he emphasized both Indonesia’s achievements as a Muslim majority democracy and its desire for a relationship respecting national sovereignty. 3, 2
After his diplomatic career, Sudjadnan was convicted in two corruption cases involving his earlier ministry work. A Jakarta court sentenced him to 20 months in 2011 over the renovation of Indonesia’s embassy in Singapore. In July 2014 he received a further sentence of two years and six months for abuses in financing international conferences in 2004–2005. In the latter case, judges found improper procurement and financial reporting, while finding that he had not personally received the money alleged by prosecutors. He died on 28 June 2025; fellow alumni also remembered his saxophone playing with the band The Ambassadors. 4, 5, 6
