Sir Nigel Sheinwald

Nigel Sheinwald served as Britain's permanent representative to the European Union before becoming Tony Blair's foreign policy and defence adviser in 2003. He moved to Washington as ambassador in 2007 and remained until 2012. In speeches across the United States he connected the alliance's defence commitments with investment, scientific cooperation, and democratic principles. 1

At Westminster College in Missouri in March 2011, Sheinwald marked the anniversary of Churchill's Iron Curtain speech by arguing that the alliance should adapt to emerging powers and political upheaval in the Middle East. After leaving the Diplomatic Service he returned to government work in 2014 as special envoy on intelligence and law enforcement data sharing, charged with negotiating arrangements between governments and communications companies across conflicting national jurisdictions. 2, 1
