Sir Kim Darroch

Kim Darroch's senior diplomatic work centered on European policy and national security. He represented Britain at the European Union from 2007 to 2011 and then served as national security adviser from 2012 to 2015, coordinating work on Russia, Iran, Libya, and the rise of the Islamic State. Earlier assignments included directing the Adriatic department during the Dayton negotiations. 1

Darroch became ambassador to the United States in 2016. In July 2019 he resigned after confidential embassy documents were leaked. In his resignation letter he said the resulting situation prevented him from doing his job as he wished and that appointing a successor was the responsible course. The Foreign Office's permanent secretary accepted his resignation while defending his professional conduct and the duty of diplomats to report candidly. 2
