Simcha Dinitz
Simcha Dinitz studied in the United States, earning degrees at Georgetown before entering the Israeli Foreign Ministry. He served in Rome and Washington and became director general of the prime minister's office and political adviser to Golda Meir. He returned to Washington as ambassador in 1973. 1
During the October 1973 war, Dinitz negotiated urgently with Henry Kissinger over American replacement of Israeli aircraft, tanks, and ammunition. At the White House on 9 October, he pressed for delivery within days and discussed the practical arrangements for air transport. He later joined the Israeli delegation at Camp David. After his embassy service he became a Hebrew University vice president, a Labor member of the Knesset, and chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization. His chairmanship included the mass immigration of Soviet Jews and the 1991 airlift of Ethiopian Jews. 2, 1
