Sergio Vento
Sergio Vento’s career connected economic diplomacy with the highest levels of Italian government. He served as deputy permanent representative to the OECD in Paris, led the foreign ministry’s office for multilateral economic institutions, and advised the deputy prime minister and treasury minister. As ambassador in Yugoslavia from 1989 to 1992, he represented Italy during the federation’s breakup. 1
From 1992 to 1995 he advised four successive prime ministers—Giuliano Amato, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Silvio Berlusconi, and Lamberto Dini—and represented Italy at the Halifax and Lyon G7 summits. Ambassadorships in France and at the United Nations preceded his Washington appointment in 2003. He later taught international relations at LUISS and worked as an adviser to an international law firm. 1
In March 2005, Vento received Washington’s assurance that Italian representatives could join the investigation into intelligence officer Nicola Calipari’s death. 2
