Antony Blinken
Antony Blinken served as Secretary of State under Joe Biden from 2021 to 2025. His appointment followed decades in foreign-policy roles, including service on the National Security Council, as Democratic staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and as Biden’s national security adviser during the Obama administration. He was deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017. That career made him an experienced participant in both congressional debate and executive-branch policy coordination. 1
Blinken emphasized cooperation with allies and partners in competition with China and in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He worked to sustain military, economic, and diplomatic support for Ukraine, while presenting international engagement as connected to American industrial capacity and prosperity. The administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, including the chaotic evacuation as the Taliban returned to power, became an early crisis and a lasting subject of congressional scrutiny. 2, 3
The war following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel became another central concern. Blinken defended American support for Israel while pressing for humanitarian access, civilian protection, the release of hostages, and an end to the conflict in Gaza. Those objectives generated sharp disputes over arms transfers and the limits of American influence on Israel’s operations. By the end of his term, he was defending an alliance-centered approach that had repeatedly been redirected by wars and crises beyond the administration’s initial priorities. 2, 3
