Ndumiso Ndima Ntshinga

Ndumiso Ntshinga represented the African National Congress in Australia before entering South Africa’s diplomatic service. He served as deputy head of the Washington embassy under Franklin Sonn and was reported as acting ambassador in February 1999. His career subsequently included responsibility for the foreign department’s Europe and Americas division as deputy director-general. 1, 2

The first Washington posting brought a public controversy. In 1999 the Mail & Guardian reported a domestic worker’s allegations that Ntshinga had assaulted and threatened her. He rejected the allegations, and the embassy said its own inquiry had cleared him. The report described a criminal case prepared but not issued. 2

President Thabo Mbeki appointed Ntshinga ambassador to China effective 1 April 2006. In April 2010 DIRCO identified him as leading government representations seeking commutation of a South African citizen’s death sentence for drug smuggling. The department said the Chinese judicial process was still under way and that consular assistance was being provided to the detainee and her family. 1, 5

Ntshinga returned to lead the Washington mission in late 2023. The South African Chamber of Commerce in the United States identified his appointment as chargé d’affaires ad interim, although public event captions used the courtesy title of ambassador. He and deputy chief Ismail Esau visited the New York Stock Exchange on 28 November 2023. 3, 4
