Namık Tan

Namık Tan was born in Mardin in 1956 and graduated from Ankara University’s law faculty in 1978. He joined the foreign ministry in 1982, serving in Moscow and Abu Dhabi before assignments at the presidency, parliament, and foreign minister’s private office. Two postings to Washington during the 1990s gave him extensive experience of the embassy before he returned as its chief. 1, 2

He served as ministry spokesman from 2004, ambassador to Israel from 2007, and deputy undersecretary from 2009. His Washington ambassadorship lasted from 2010 to 2014. Shortly after his arrival, Ankara recalled him for consultations following a House committee vote recognizing the Armenian genocide. 1, 3

Tan subsequently entered parliament as an Istanbul representative in its twenty-eighth term, serving on the foreign affairs committee and in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He also continued public discussion of American affairs: in April 2026 he joined fellow former Washington ambassador Murat Mercan in a debate at Bilkent University. 1, 4
