Miguel Ángel de la Campa
Miguel Ángel de la Campa y Caraveda trained in civil and public law at the University of Havana. He entered the foreign service in 1906 and served in Paris, Rome, The Hague, Berlin, London, and Berne. He later held senior foreign ministry responsibilities and represented Cuba in Mexico. 1, 2
Campa also promoted regional cooperation through the Sociedad Colombista Panamericana and the Inter-American Union of the Caribbean, which he chaired. The latter brought together government delegates and cultural institutions. His 1944 publication Política regional del Caribe advocated stronger commercial and transport connections, including a route linking Florida, Cuba, and Yucatán with the continental highway network. 2
As ambassador in Washington in the 1950s, he defended Batista’s government. In December 1956 he told American officials that Fidel Castro’s movement had little popular support and would be contained. He also discussed strained relations with Haiti and the Dominican Republic and agreed to convey American concerns over telephone rates to Batista. 3
Campa became defence minister in 1958. After the revolution he went into exile in Miami, where he died in 1965. 2, 1
