Luiz Pereira Sodré

Luiz Pereira Sodré came from Bahia and served in the army during the independence campaigns, retiring as a lieutenant before entering the foreign ministry. He later served in Vienna and the United States. He also wrote Direito Internacional, a work concerning Brazil’s treaties with foreign countries. 4

He took temporary charge of the Paris legation in August 1831 after serving as its acting secretary. In September he explained that he was still responsible because the new minister had not yet been received by the French government. He also reported seeking formal recognition for a Brazilian consul-general and handling a passport request. 1, 2

In April 1852, while in charge at Washington, Sodré sent Paulino José Soares de Souza a detailed report on trade and shipping. For the year ending June 1851, he counted 286 departures from American ports to Brazil, of which 255 were American vessels. He contrasted that dominance with the small Brazilian presence and reported on the scale of American shipbuilding. 5

After Russia (1850–1851) and Washington, Sodré was recalled and reached Pará in October 1852. He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1885. 3, 4
