Lucien-Anatole Prévost-Paradol
Lucien-Anatole Prévost-Paradol was a journalist and political writer before his brief diplomatic career. Born in Paris in 1829, he studied at the École normale supérieure and taught literature at Aix before joining the Journal des débats. He became a prominent critic of the Second Empire; a political pamphlet brought him a month’s imprisonment in 1860. He entered the Académie française in 1865. 1, 2
His book La France nouvelle, published in 1868, proposed a parliamentary government protecting fundamental liberties. He considered constitutional monarchy and a moderate republic possible vehicles for that program. His liberalism also coexisted with support for overseas colonial expansion as a means of maintaining France’s power. Two unsuccessful attempts to enter the legislature preceded his decision to support the Empire’s liberal reforms in 1870. 3
He accepted the American mission in June 1870 and sailed on 1 July. In a later commemorative speech, Camille Rousset recalled that Prévost-Paradol intended to study the United States and extend Tocqueville’s account to a country transformed by the intervening decades. 4
Prévost-Paradol died by suicide in Washington in July 1870, soon after arriving and as war began between France and Prussia. Contemporary memorial writing connected his death closely to the collapse of his hopes for the liberal Empire. Later scholarship cautions that no single explanation is decisive. 1, 2, 4
