Karin Olofsdotter
Karin Olofsdotter joined the foreign service in 1994 and began with a posting in Moscow. Her career included leadership roles in the foreign ministry, service as deputy chief of mission in Washington from 2008 to 2011, and an ambassadorship in Hungary. In September 2017 she became the first woman to head Sweden's embassy in the United States. 1
Her Washington work combined security policy, trade, and public diplomacy. In an October 2022 interview she described meeting American senators about Sweden's application to join NATO and representing Sweden when President Joe Biden signed the American ratification documents for Swedish and Finnish accession on 9 August. 2
Olofsdotter also used travel within the United States to connect Swedish business and culture with local institutions. During a 2022 Los Angeles visit she discussed port cooperation and transportation, met technology businesses, spoke at UCLA, and opened a museum exhibition on Scandinavian design and its American connections. She had herself studied at UCLA's Anderson School of Management before her diplomatic career. 2, 1
