José Marques Lisboa

José Marques Lisboa (1807–1897) was born in Rio Grande and built a career in Brazil’s European and American missions. He reported from the Low Countries in 1830–1831. On 30 August 1830 he described to his colleague Eustáquio Adolfo de Melo Matos the outbreak in Brussels, the civic guard’s role, and the spread of the revolt to other Belgian cities. He subsequently forwarded newspaper accounts of the Prince of Orange’s military operations. 1, 2

After service in Belgium, Lisboa briefly headed the Washington mission in 1837–1838, combining the diplomatic and consul-general roles. He later served in London and The Hague and, from 1852, in France. The National Historical Museum preserves a small collection of his 1848 correspondence concerning the steamship Affonso, including accounts of its voyage and crew. He held the imperial councillor’s distinction and died in Rio de Janeiro on 20 March 1897. 3, 1
