José Augusto Ferreira da Costa
José Augusto Ferreira da Costa served as a secretary and acting head of Brazil's Washington legation before taking a succession of South American and European posts. On 18 July 1889, he informed Secretary of State James Blaine that shots had been fired at the emperor's carriage in Rio de Janeiro and that the imperial family had escaped injury. 1
By September 1892, Costa was managing the legation in Buenos Aires. His correspondence with Assis Brasil followed Argentine preparations for the boundary arbitration to be heard in Washington: he reported that Nicolás Calvo would consult European archives before proceeding to the United States. Costa also reported negotiations with the Argentine government over Brazilian political refugees near the frontier, including arrangements to move them inland to Mercedes in Corrientes. 2
In 1904, Costa recalled his 1895 appointment to Colombia and Ecuador, pneumonia in Quito, and 1897 arrival in Bogotá. After those legations closed, he went to the Holy See with concurrent Russian accreditation. He later served in Russia (1903–1909). He died in April 1910. 4, 3
