Herman Lagercrantz

Born 1859
Died 1945

Herman Lagercrantz trained as an artillery officer before joining the Salvation Army with his wife, Hedvig. After a period in England they returned to Sweden in 1889. Herman took responsibility for organization and personnel under Hanna Ouchterlony, while Hedvig led work among the urban poor. 1

William Booth sent Lagercrantz to India in 1896 to direct social work and explore an agricultural settlement scheme inspired by Swedish smallholdings. Illness forced his return. He left Salvation Army service, settled at Wirsbo, and entered industrial and banking work. 1

He served as Sweden’s envoy in Washington from 1907 to 1910 and helped arrange Prince Wilhelm’s American visit in 1907. In a letter that September, Oscar II thanked him for the preparations and credited the visit with strengthening ties between Swedish emigrants and their homeland. 1, 2

Lagercrantz returned to the United States in 1917 with A. R. Nordvall to seek food and raw material imports for Sweden. Their June memorandum contested claims that neutral countries were draining American grain supplies. They reported that wheat owned by Swedes remained in American elevators because of shipping restrictions, and argued that Sweden’s ban on cereal exports prevented its onward shipment. 3, 4

His industrial career continued alongside these missions. He managed Wirsbo from 1897 to 1927, became its sole owner in 1907, and chaired Sweden’s Export Association from 1913 to 1935. He died in 1945. 5
