Gunnar Jarring
Gunnar Jarring was a scholar of Turkic languages before becoming a diplomat. He earned his doctorate at Lund in 1933 and continued linguistic and ethnographic writing alongside public service. His early diplomatic career took him to Ankara, Tehran, Baghdad, and Addis Ababa, followed by a ministerial appointment in India and additional regional accreditations. 1
Jarring became Sweden's permanent representative at the United Nations in 1956 and represented his country on the Security Council in 1957–1958. He then served as ambassador in Washington from 1958 to 1964 before moving to Moscow. 1
After the 1967 Arab–Israeli war, Secretary-General U Thant appointed Jarring to pursue the peace principles in Security Council Resolution 242. Jarring established his mission's headquarters in Cyprus in December 1967 and began visits to the governments concerned. His active mediation continued until 1973, while he formally retained the special representative role until 1990. 2, 3
