Andreas Michaelis
Andreas Michaelis studied political science and philosophy in Hanover and Oxford and entered Germany’s foreign service in 1989. He worked in the minister of state’s office and at the embassy in Tel Aviv, then served as Foreign Office spokesman. Ambassadorial work in Singapore and Israel alternated with responsibility for Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa in Berlin. 1
Michaelis became political director and served twice as state secretary, with an intervening appointment as ambassador in London. His second period as state secretary ran from January 2022 to July 2023. He then moved to Washington, where he began serving as ambassador in August 2023. 1
His public agenda in Washington included the transatlantic relationship, Germany’s role in the European Union, assistance to Ukraine, and the consequences of the Israel–Hamas war. A November 2023 George Washington University event advertised a discussion of those subjects with specialists in German politics and history. 2
