Epaminondas Leite Chermont

Epaminondas Leite Chermont served in Brazil’s diplomatic and consular service across Europe, the United States, Mexico, and East Asia. He served in London before transferring to Washington in 1905. He also served as a secretary to Brazil’s delegation at the 1906 International American Conference in Rio de Janeiro. 1

After Joaquim Nabuco died in Washington on 17 January 1910, Chermont formally notified Secretary of State Philander Knox as Brazil’s chargé d’affaires. He handled correspondence over the American honors and transport arranged for the ambassador’s remains, conveying thanks on behalf of the Brazilian government and Nabuco’s family. The plans involved the presidential yacht Mayflower and, after a change of vessel, the cruiser North Carolina. 2, 3, 4

Chermont subsequently served in Mexico, was appointed to the missions in Tokyo and Beijing in 1915, and returned to Japan after leave in 1921. He transferred to Stockholm in 1926. 1
