Enrique Patterson

Enrique Patterson served in Cuba’s Washington embassy before and after the 1959 revolution. As minister-counselor, he attended a March 1953 ceremony at the United States National Archives, where officials discussed cooperation between the two countries' archives. 1

His work also included military liaison. A study drawing on Cuban military records describes a 1954 report in which Patterson supported requests for additional airborne infantry, antiaircraft, and aviation units. He and military attaché Ramón Barquín discussed the proposals with American officials. 2

On March 7, 1960, Secretary of State Christian Herter summoned Patterson following the explosion of the arms ship La Coubre in Havana. Herter protested Fidel Castro’s allegations of American responsibility. Patterson undertook to transmit the protest to Havana and expressed his personal hope that relations would improve. 3
