Ejaz Azim

Ejaz Azim entered Pakistan's army in 1948 after studying at Punjab University. He served with the UN operation in the Congo and at UN headquarters, then advised Ghana's army in the early 1960s. His later training included the armor course at Fort Knox and postgraduate defense studies. He commanded the National Defence College and an army corps before retiring as a lieutenant general and taking up the Washington embassy in 1981. ^{4, 1, 3}

As Multan's deputy administrator under martial law, he visited Colony Textile Mills after police killed striking workers there in 1978. ⁵

Azim's appointment accompanied a renewed American security commitment to Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The White House's credentials brief placed a proposed $3.2 billion military and economic assistance package over six years at the center of the relationship. By 1985, however, nuclear procurement had become a recurring problem. State Department preparations for a meeting with Azim paired a warning about clandestine purchases with plans to notify Congress of a Sidewinder missile sale. ^{1, 2}

His Washington posting ended in 1986. He later worked as a consultant and lecturer, and died in February 1998. ^{4, 3}
