Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti

Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti combined economics teaching with work on development and international finance. He graduated from the University of Indonesia in 1964, earned a Berkeley master’s degree in financial administration in 1966, and completed his doctorate there in 1980. His criticism of President Suharto’s authoritarian government brought 27 months of imprisonment during the 1970s and a travel ban that delayed his doctoral work. He returned to academic leadership, becoming professor of economic planning and dean of the University of Indonesia’s economics faculty. 1, 2

During Indonesia’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, Dorodjatun worked under diplomat Nana Sutresna on cooperation between developing countries and industrialized economies. In a later recollection, he described preparing proposals on debt relief for the poorest members and searching for ways to finance cooperation among countries of the Global South. He credited Sutresna with teaching him to pursue these objectives through negotiation. 3

Appointed ambassador to the United States in 1998, Dorodjatun represented Indonesia during the financial collapse and political transition that ended Suharto’s presidency. His work centered on sustaining financial support from the United States and the International Monetary Fund. His Washington assignment lasted until 2001, when President Megawati Sukarnoputri brought him into her cabinet as coordinating minister for economic affairs. 2

His ministerial responsibilities included debt management, banking reform, regional decentralization, and unemployment. Dorodjatun later recalled leading Indonesia’s delegation to the Paris Club negotiations in 2002 to reschedule government debt payments. Berkeley honored him with its Haas International Award in 2003. He subsequently cochaired the group preparing Indonesia’s position for the UN General Assembly’s sixtieth anniversary and served on the advisory board of the National Resilience Institute in 2006–2010. 1, 2, 3
