Domingos José Gonçalves de Magalhães

Domingos José Gonçalves de Magalhães was a physician by training and a leading figure in Brazil's early Romantic movement. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1811, he completed his medical studies in 1832 and developed an interest in philosophy. In Paris he helped launch the journal Niterói and published Suspiros poéticos e saudades in 1836. Returning to Brazil, he wrote plays, taught philosophy at Colégio Pedro II, and worked as a secretary to the future Duke of Caxias in Maranhão and Rio Grande do Sul. ¹

Magalhães entered diplomatic service in 1847 and represented Brazil in European and American capitals, including Washington in the late 1860s. He continued to write while abroad. His long poem A Confederação dos Tamoios prompted a literary dispute in which José de Alencar criticized the work and Pedro II defended it. Later diplomatic assignments included Argentina and the Holy See. ¹

Letters to the artist and diplomat Manuel de Araújo Porto-Alegre discuss family, illness, and the effort to sustain their friendship across distant postings. Writing from Washington on 28 July 1868, Magalhães urged his friend to write at least monthly. Magalhães died in Rome in 1882. ^{2, 1}
