Carl Lewenhaupt

Carl Lewenhaupt entered the Swedish–Norwegian foreign service after studying at Lund. He worked in Paris and Saint Petersburg, then led the foreign ministry's political department and its trade and consular department before becoming cabinet secretary in 1873. His Washington appointment in 1876 combined the duties of envoy with an acting consul-generalship. 1

In Washington, Lewenhaupt became an umpire in the American–Spanish claims commission established to settle claims arising from the Cuban insurrection. The 1882 Congressional Directory identifies him in that role. 1, 2

At the International Meridian Conference in Washington in 1884, Lewenhaupt briefly chaired the opening organization. He nominated American rear-admiral C. R. P. Rodgers as permanent president, and the delegates unanimously accepted. 4

After moving to Paris in 1884, Lewenhaupt became foreign minister in 1889. He sought a compromise in the growing dispute over Sweden and Norway's shared foreign affairs, proposing in 1893 that a Norwegian should be eligible to become the union's foreign minister. The proposal failed to resolve the conflict and drew opposition from Swedish conservatives. He left the ministry in 1895, served in London, and retired in 1902. 1, 3
