Camillo Romano Avezzana
Camillo Romano Avezzana (1867–1949) was born in Naples and graduated in law there in 1889. Before his American ambassadorship, he represented Italy in Persia during 1907–10. His dispatches from those years form part of the documentary record of Iran’s constitutional struggles. 1, 2
During the Polish–Soviet War, Avezzana conveyed Rome’s request for clarification of American policy as Russian forces advanced into Poland. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby’s reply of 10 August 1920 defended Polish independence while rejecting recognition of the Bolshevik government and the dismemberment of Russia. 3
He subsequently represented Italy at the Portorose conference and served as secretary-general of the Genoa conference in 1922. In November that year he became ambassador in Paris. He later joined the Italian–Greek conciliation commission and was appointed to the Senate in 1934. 1, 4
After the Second World War, his senatorial position was referred to the High Court dealing with sanctions against Fascism. The request to deprive him of his seat was rejected on 21 January 1946. He died at Eboli in June 1949. 5, 1
